Where to Stay in Kuta Lombok

The short answer: stay in Kuta town or just outside it. Almost every beach and surf break on the south coast is a 10 to 30 minute ride from there. Stay further out only if you want one particular beach or wave right on your doorstep.

We live and host guests here, so this guide is the version we give friends. It covers what each area is like, who it suits, and the practical things nobody mentions until you arrive.

The areas, west to east

Kuta sits in the middle of a long south coast, with quiet bays to the west and the surf villages to the east.

GerupukAbout 10 min eastFishing village with several breaks reached by local boat. Inside is beginner-friendly, Outside suits intermediates.Surfers who want the waves on the doorstep

Kuta town is the easy choice if you don't ride a scooter. You can walk to dinner, a surf lesson and a coffee. The trade-off is noise: bars and scooters run late in the centre.

Just outside town gives you the same restaurants five minutes away, without the noise. You'll want a scooter or a driver, since nothing is walkable at night.

The Mandalika zone is where the big resort brands are. It suits a resort holiday, but it feels separate from the village life of Kuta itself.

Selong Belanak and Gerupuk are for people who know exactly what they came for: the calm bay in the west, or the waves in the east. Expect a drive into Kuta for most restaurants.

Which area suits you

  • Surfing most days: Gerupuk if you want to wake up at the boats. Just outside Kuta if you want to reach Gerupuk, Are Guling and Tanjung Aan equally fast, plus good food at night.
  • Learning to surf: Selong Belanak or Kuta town. Both have surf schools and gentle beginner waves nearby.
  • Couples: just outside town. Quiet evenings, with dinner in Kuta five minutes away.
  • Families: just outside town or Selong Belanak. Space, calm nights, and calm water at Selong and Mawun.
  • Remote work: just outside town, in a place with reliable wifi and backup power. Kuta's grid does drop.
  • First visit, no scooter: Kuta town, so you can walk everywhere.

  • Getting around: a scooter is the easiest way to reach the beaches, at about IDR 70,000 to 100,000 a day. A car with driver runs about IDR 350,000 to 500,000 a day.
  • Grab: drop-offs are fine, but pickups in the town centre are frowned upon by local drivers. Ask your host to book a local driver instead.
  • Seasons: May to September is dry season. October to April is wet season, often with the best waves for experienced surfers.
  • Power: the grid in Kuta drops now and then. If you work online, ask whether your stay has backup power.

  • MotoGP weekend: the Indonesian MotoGP runs at the Mandalika circuit once a year. Check the race dates and book early if your trip overlaps.
